Renter-Friendly Bathroom Makeover
Five changes cover a rental bathroom: the curtain and rod, the bulb temperature, a peel-and-stick floor over the old one, a better mirror, and textiles in one colour.

The five changes worth making
None of these need permission, a drill, or a conversation. The first two take an evening and change the room more than the rest put together.
The shower curtain and the rod
The problem: A clouded plastic liner on a sagging rod, doing more visual damage than the tile is.
The curtain is the biggest block of colour in the room. Hang a fabric one high, near the ceiling rather than where the old rod sat, on a tension rod that leaves no screws. Buy a separate liner and replace the liner when it yellows, not the curtain.

The light
The problem: One fixture, one cool blue-white bulb, and everyone looks ill in the mirror at 7am.
Change the bulb, not the fixture. Look for 2700K to 3000K on the box and match every bulb in the room, because one warm and one cool is worse than two bad ones. If the glass shade offends you, most unscrew: box it, put it back at move-out.

The floor
The problem: Beige speckled vinyl, or small square tile in a colour that stopped being made for a reason.
Peel-and-stick vinyl lays over what is there and comes back up, but only on a floor that is clean, dry, flat and smooth. It will not hold on textured tile or deep grout lines, and steam plus a damp bath mat lifts the edges. Cut a paper template first, toilet base included.

A mirror that is not the builder's
The problem: The frameless sheet glued flat to the wall, which is not coming off without drywall attached.
Leave it. Frame it with a stick-on mirror frame kit, or hang a round mirror on another wall and use that one. No spare wall means leaning a small one on the counter. Mirrors are heavier than they look, so any adhesive needs a rating well above the weight.

Textiles, all in one colour
The problem: Six towels in six colours and a bath mat left over from somewhere else.
The change that costs the least and reads the most. Pick one colour, buy three bath towels and two hand towels in it, and add a mat in the same family. The room looks deliberate the moment the soft things agree, whatever the tile is doing.

What not to touch
The general principle is on decorating without losing your deposit. Here is the bathroom version, because a wet room punishes a reversible-looking change harder than any other room.

Photograph these before you start
- Every grout line, close up — Existing staining is the most disputed thing in a bathroom.
- The ceiling above the shower — Mould that was already starting is not yours, but only if the file is dated.
- The floor behind the door — Old vinyl lifts here first, and your tile edge will get the blame.
- The wall at both ends of the rod — Tension rods dent soft paint. Photograph it before yours goes up.
- Under the sink, pipe joints included — Old drips leave rings. Take it on day one, keep it until the deposit lands.
Taking it all out again
Everything above comes out in an hour. The rod lifts off, the original bulb and shade go back, the towels come with you, and the floor tile peels up warm — run a hairdryer over each tile for a few seconds and it releases instead of tearing what is underneath.
