Place these four things, in order
- The sofa — Longest wall, or facing the main view — a window, a fireplace, the TV, in that order of preference. Do not start with the TV. A room arranged around a television is a room you only ever use one way.
- The rug — Big enough that the front legs of every seat sit on it. That single rule is what separates a room that looks arranged from a room that looks like furniture parked near a mat.
- The coffee table — About 45cm (18") from the sofa — close enough to reach a mug without standing, far enough to walk past. Roughly two-thirds the sofa's length looks right.
- Lighting — Three sources at different heights and the overhead light becomes optional. A floor lamp, a table lamp and something low is the whole recipe.
Everything else — plants, shelving, the chair you inherited — fits around those four. Get them right and the room is basically done; get them wrong and no amount of decorating rescues it.
Small-room problems, solved
The room is also the dining room. Put the table against a wall and pull it out when you need it, or use a narrow console that extends. Two half-committed zones beat one crowded room that does neither job.
